Snorkelling
Snorkelling can be done by anybody of any age in the protected and shallow water where Kisite Island offers shallow coral reefs full of tropical fish. We offer a daily boat trip with all the equipment you will need, and a guide who can show you the fascinating underwater world of Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park. Often dolphins swim around the Dhows on the way to the marine reserve and sometimes even swim around you whilst you are snorkelling.
Over the years the dolphins of this area have accustomed themselves to accompanying the dhows that ply to and from the marine park, and even in the Wasini channel directly opposite the Shimoni Reef Lodge sea side terrace This familiarity has extended to swimming around snorkelers in the marine park, and it’s quite normal to have groups of dolphin playing around the boat at anchorage in Kisite, or even swimming around people in the water. Add to this the turtles that move up and down the shallow clear fringing reef as you swim, the myriad of reef fish surrounding the coral life, and different depths to explore, Kisite is truly a unique and fantastic snorkeling and day trip on the water and under it.
After snorkeling for a few hours you can stop off at some of the other islands in the marine reserve especially inner Penguti which at low tide offers a Robinson Crusoe experience to be on an uninhabited island on a beach all alone. Because our boat trips are with small numbers with guests who usually know each other we can spread our time between several sites, not just one, and we can stay as long as we want and are comfortable. This is the sort or flexibility and service that you will only get with the Shimoni Reef.
